Reasons to Cancel CLEAR
Though there are a number of great things about CLEAR, it’s undoubtedly not right for every traveler. While it will help you shave off minutes–and even hours at some airports–it’s often difficult to justify the steep price tag if you don’t fly frequently. Or if you don’t fly frequently enough through airports that offer CLEAR. It also doesn’t offer the benefits of TSA Pre-Check, such as not having to take off your shoes or take electronics and liquids out of your carry-on bag.
Here are the most common reasons travelers cancel their CLEAR membership:
- It’s expensive (especially compared to TSA Pre-Check which offers similar benefits)
- It’s not available at every airport in every terminal
- It doesn’t offer great value for those who do not fly frequently
- You still have to take your shoes and belt off
- …and take electronics and liquids out of your carryon
- It does not offer international benefits like Global Entry
- Those with airline status may often use the airline’s priority security lines
- Those who fly business and first class may find that their airline offers a separate, priority security line
Keep in mind that one benefit of CLEAR being so easy to sign up for is that if you later do decide that CLEAR is the right choice for you, it only takes a few minutes to register. So for as easy as it is to cancel your CLEAR free trial or membership, it’s equally as easy to sign back up.
Bottom Line
What’s nice about CLEAR is that it makes it easy to cancel your membership or free trial. While CLEAR has been worth the price for me in the past as I traveled through notoriously busy airports with incredibly long security lines, I don’t have any upcoming plans to fly through these airports and so my membership currently does not have enough benefit for the price. However, I do recommend CLEAR for those who frequent busy U.S. airports as it can save you a lot of time and help you avoid missing your flight or having to get to the airport hours in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much does CLEAR cost?
CLEAR comes with a steep price tag of $189 per year per person. Under the family plan, individuals can add others to their account for an additional $60 per person per year and any child under 18 traveling with a parent or guardian who is a CLEAR member is free. Is TSA Pre-Check still worth it?
Despite the growing number of TSA Pre-Check members, it’s still worth having if you’re a frequent domestic flyer. Reason being, is that while there are more more members than ever, it’s still a far faster way to get through airport security. It also comes with some perks like not having the hassle of taking off your shoes or belt and you don’t have to unpack your electronics or any liquids from your carry-on bag. Check out the complete breakdown of TSA Pre-Check, its pros and cons, costs, and how it compares to the competition with our TSA Pre-Check review.
If I have Global Entry can I use the TSA Pre-Check lines?
Yes, Global Entry members can use TSA Pre-Check lines. This makes it a good choice for those who frequently travel both internationally and domestically.
